St. Regis Kanai vs. Edition Kanai Riviera Maya Resorts: Which One Is Actually for You?

Two Marriott properties anchor it: The St. Regis Kanai and The Riviera Maya Edition. I have stayed at both. And while they share an address, they are fundamentally different experiences serving fundamentally different travelers.

Here is what I found.

First Impressions: Arrival and Atmosphere

Arrival at the St. Regis is ceremonial. The architecture is grand without being cold. High ceilings, natural stone, the kind of proportions that make you straighten up slightly as you walk through the doors. There is a quiet formality to it, softened by warm tones and the unmistakable presence of Mexico in the textiles, the art, and the materials. You feel attended to from the moment you arrive.

The Edition hits differently. The lobby is sculptural, deliberate, the kind of space that stops you mid-sentence. Where the St. Regis draws from tradition, the Edition draws from design. The energy is cooler, more self-aware, and the guests reflect that. You arrive and feel like you have found something, rather than been welcomed somewhere.

Neither is better. They are simply speaking different languages.

The Rooms

St. Regis suites lean into the sensory. Layers of texture, buttery linens, deep soaking tubs positioned to face the water. The rooms feel curated rather than designed, and the butler service means the experience adapts to you rather than asking you to adapt to it.

Edition rooms are a study in restraint. Clean lines, natural light, materials that feel intentional rather than lavish. There is something almost meditative about the spaces, which works beautifully if you travel to decompress, and may feel spare if you travel to be indulged.

Both properties offer ocean-facing options worth the upgrade. At the St. Regis, the swim-up suites are particularly nice, but can be misleading if selecting an ocean view option on the first floor - the mangroves can be an obstruction. At the Edition, the upper-floor rooms with wrap terraces are quietly spectacular.

Food and Beverage

The St. Regis delivers on ritual. The signature cocktail hour, butler-served breakfast, the quiet choreography of a team that anticipates before you ask. Dining here is elevated and consistent. You will eat extremely well without ever having to think too hard about it.

The Edition brings a different kind of energy to the table. The culinary programming leans creative and the bar scene has genuine personality. If food and drink are a central part of how you experience a place, the Edition gives you more to discover.

The best part - you can experience all the dining Kanai has to offer for dining. All 3 - and soon be 4 properties are easily accessible via golf cart. Make sure you keep extra cash to tip. Make reservations!

Pool and Beach

The St. Regis beach is protected and intimate, with service that finds you before you realize you need it. The pool scene is serene rather than social. The adult pool is adjacent to sea and very nearly perfect. The family pool is sprawling with lots of Bali beds, which is an excellent landing area for kids and adults alike.

The Edition commands its stretch of coastline with intention. The pools feel designed for lingering, for seeing and being seen in the best possible way. The vibe builds through the day in a way the St. Regis does not try to replicate.

If your ideal beach day involves cold towels delivered silently while you finish a chapter, you are a St. Regis guest. If you want your beach day to feel like an event, the Edition is your answer.

Spa and Wellness

The St. Regis spa experience is deeply considered, unhurried, and thorough. Treatments draw from regional traditions and the facilities themselves feel like a destination within the destination.

The Edition's wellness offering is more streamlined, focused on performance and precision over ritual. It suits the property's overall sensibility.

Who Should Book Which

Book the St. Regis if you: are celebrating something significant, want butler service and seamless choreography, prefer a hushed and traditional luxury environment, or are returning to the Riviera Maya and ready to be thoroughly looked after.

Book the Edition if you: are drawn to design and aesthetics, want a more social atmosphere with culinary personality, travel with a partner who values cool over cozy, or are visiting Kanai for the first time and want to be surprised.

The Honest Take

The question I get most often is whether one is simply better than the other. It is not the right question. Kanai was built to hold two distinct visions of luxury on one coastline, and it pulls it off.

What I will tell you is this: the St. Regis rewards you for showing up. The Edition rewards you for paying attention. Both are exceptional. Both deserve to be on your radar.

The one that is right for you depends entirely on what you are looking for when you travel, and that is a conversation worth having before you book.

If I was traveling with my kids - it's the St. Regis hands down. It's kids club is top notch. If I was traveling with my girlfriends - the Edition is my choice. For a couples trip - both are great. Just follow your vibes.
